welcome

For many years St Alphege Church, Solihull has had a large choir of Boys and Men. The Boys, aged seven and above, are drawn from local schools and benefit from the musical training they receive and the musical, social and intellectual challenges they encounter. They sing each week two fully choral services and are joined by the seventeen Men of the choir. Most of the Boys go on to sing with the Men when their voices change and several have won choral scholarships at universities. In addition to their work in Solihull, the choir is in demand for concerts and cathedral visits. Each year the choir fill in during cathedral choir holidays, most recently in Paris, Dublin, Portsmouth and Exeter.

The Girls' Choir was formed in 2002. 24 girls aged between 7 and 15 rehearse on Wednesday evenings and sing twice a month on Sundays.

In 2008 one of our choir girls, Alice Halstead, won the prestigious title of BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year.

There are also opportunities for Ladies who sing twice a month on Sundays and rehearse on two Fridays a month.

For more information regarding any of the choirs please email the Director of Music, Nigel Stark  or call him on 0121 705 1074 or 07792 276046.

The music at St. Alphege has been sustained through a long period of stability and continuity. The current Director of Music was appointed in 2002, and his immediate two predecessors were both in post for around 30 years. Some of the men in the choir have been attending for even longer - Michael Palmer has been in the choir for over 50 years!

Past members of this choir have gone on to great things: Iain Simcock is an internationally renowned organist, harpsichordist and Directeur musical of the Académie Vocale de Paris; Nigel Short is a past member of the King's Singers and currently directs the professional chamber choir Tenebrae; Christopher Monks is Director of the Armonico Consort.

Organ recitals are usually held on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 1.10pm in St. Alphege Church, Solihull. There is a large screen video link so the player can be observed in action.

Freshly made sandwiches and coffee and tea are available from 12.30pm. Admission Free
